PATAL BHUVANESHWAR AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF HINDU MYTHOLOGY (पाताल भुवनेश्वर)

PATAL BHUVANESHWAR (पाताल भुवनेश्वर)  is a limestone cave temple which is 14 kilometer from Gangolihat in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state in India. Patal Bhuvaneshwar is  91 kilometer from Pithoragarh and 105 kilometer from Jageshwer Temples.  Amongst  the most popular religious caves in India, Patal Bhubaneswar caves are situated in Bhubaneswar village near Gangolihat in Uttarakhand.

According to legend and the local folklore Patal Bhubaneshwar cave are enshrined to  Lord Shiva and thirty three koti demigods [33 types of Demigods (12 Adityas, 8 Vasus, 11 Rudras, 1 Indra and 1 Prajapati) in hindu culture]. The cave is 160 m long and 90 feet deep from the point of entrance.  The legend has it that these caves were found in the Treta Yug by King Rituparna of Suryavansha dynasty. It is also believed that there were four doors to enter the cave namely Randwar’ ‘Paapdwar’, ‘Dharamdwar’ and ‘Mokshadwar’. According to Hindu mythology, Paapdwar was closed shortly after the death of Ravana and the Randwar was shut down after the epic war of Mahabharata. Therefore there are only two entrances that remain open now. These caves are believed to be the home of all Hindu Gods and Goddesses. One can see various limestone rock formations here and amongst the most interesting ones are the figures that resembles the Sheshnag the tongue of Kali, Airavat of Indra, Ganesha, the hair of Lord Shiva and Kal Bhairav.

It is a visual depiction of Srimad Bhagavatham. It is an encyclopaedia into the Hindu mythology and has reference to various Eras of time, Sagar Manthan (Ocean churning), Lord Ganesh beheading, Pandavas, River Ganga in Lord Shiva’s hairs and many more.  Reference about this cave is found in ‘Manaskhand’ and ‘Skandpuran’ whose 800 verses tells about Patal Bhuvneshwar. Cave is all natural, not constructed or carved by any human. 

“He who wants to feel the presence of eternal power should come to the sacred Bhuvneshwar situated near the confluence of Ramganga, Sarayu and Gupt-Ganga.” -Manaskhanda, Skandapuran, whose 800 verses refer to Patal Bhuvaneshwar.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a unique place and attracts all kinds of people.  It is also a discovery place for students of Geology, Geography as well as Science and enrich their knowledge. It is a cave with a small entrance which opens up into a vast space inside which leads to a number of caves within the caves. Limestone rock formations have created various spectacular stalactite and stalagmite figures of various hues and forms. The cave is fully electrically illuminated. You cannot take your mobiles or cameras inside the cave. Visitors with High BP and Asthma  should avoid getting down inside the Cave.  Some places are slippery and need extra caution. Not for very young children and very aged persons as you need to struggle through the 30 meter downwards and upwards journey.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar is well connected with most of the important towns and cities of Uttarakhand.  Best time to visit : In the months of Febuaray to November.   Timings: winter : 08:00 am to 5:00 pm and Summer : 07:00 am to 06:00 pm. open and close timing will vary during the festival time.

  • One can reach from Delhi to Pantnagar by air and the shortest flight time is 01 hour 00 minutes.  Pantnagar Airport is at a distance of nearly 228 kilometres from Patal Bhuvaneshwar ( 8 hours by road).  One can hire/book a cab for Patal Bhubneshwar.
  • BY RAIL :
  • The nearest rail head to Patal Bhuvaneshwar is Tanakpur situated at a distance of 179 kilometer ( 6 Hours by raod). Taxis and buses are easily available from Tanakpur Railway Station to Patal Bhuvaneshwar, Gangolighat.Tanakpur is well connected with major destinations of India like Lucknow, Delhi, Agra and Kolkata.  Kathgodam is also another railway station at a distance of nearly 192 kilometres from Patal Bhuvaneshwar ( 7 Hours by road). Kathgodam is very well connected with Delhi by rail. Shatabdi 12040/New Delhi-Kathgodam Shatabdi Express.
  • BY ROAD : 
  • Patal Bhuvaneshwar is well connected with most of the important towns and cities of Uttarakhand.  Route is  Delhi – Ghaziabad – Muradabad – Rampur – - Rudrapur – Bhowali – Almora – Badechhina Sheraghat – Berinag road – Gangoli hat Total – 515 kms – 13 hr drive – 2 pit stops. On way back one can stay at Almora and then drive back to Delhi – The route is   Almora – Haldwani – Rudrapur – Rampur – Ghaziabad – Delhi – 8.5 hrs drive.
