VAJRESHWARI DEVI - बज्रेश्वरी देवी मंदिर – NAGARKOT DHAM – KANGRA  HIMACHAL PRADESH

The Vajreshwari temple is located in the town of Kangra, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, India and is 11 km away from the nearest railway station of Kangra. The Kangra Fort is situated nearby and  the beautiful hill station Dharamshala, is just 17 km from Kangra is a tourist destination.  From Delhi it is about 500 km and can be reached by road; rail and by air.  There are lots of buses / deluxe bus / Volvo coach start from ISBT New Delhi to Kangra daily morning as well as in the evening.  Its an overnight journey from Delhi to Kangra via Chandigarh, Nangal, and Una.    Kangra is situated at a distance of 50 kms from Jwala Mukhi.    Kangra is connected with Pathankot via rail as well as road.  Lots of buses especially Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) runs daily between  Kangra  and  Delhi, Chandigarh, Pathankot as well as Palampur,  and Mandi.

Kangra was known as “SUSHARMA PUR” during the ancient period. The name had been given in the honor of a great king Susharma as mentioned in the Mahabharata. Another name dating back to Mahabharta time was  ” TRIGARTH “.

Vajeshwari Devi Temple, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.

During the invasion of Mehmud Ghaznavi, its name was “NAGAR KOT”. Vajreshwari Devi Mandir is dedicated to the goddess Vajreshvari, located in the town Nagarkot  (KANGRA ),  in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

The festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated every year – as per the mythological story.  When the goddess Vajreshwari conquered the demons after killing them, the gods worshipped the goddess by singing various hymns in her praise.  The body of goddess was wounded during the battle with the demons.  The gods applied ghee on these wounds.  This tradition is still continued.  On the night after Makar Sankaranti, popularly called Lohri, the goddess (Holy PINDI) is smeared with two quintiles of Desi ghee after washing the idol by water of well, hundred times.  Later the PINDI is decorated by flowers and essence applied.

GUPT GANGA – Gupt Ganga is situated at a distance of 2 kms.  According to Mahabharata, it is believed that the Pandavas during the period of exile, spent some time in Kangra, at this place.  There was  scarcity of water  in this area.  Arjun pierced the earth with his arrows and water gushed out from this place as per the legend.  Water is continuously flowing from this place since then.  However, the source of water is unknown.  As such this place is called Gupt Ganga.

One among the hectic pilgrim center, Bajreshwari Devi Temple, is a must visit sacred spot that one should not spare with.
